The source code in this issue is designed for Visual Basic 5.0 and above. It is geared towards the intermediate to advanced programmer. If you have any questions about this issue, please email us at questions@codeoftheweek.com
This source can be used in earlier versions of VB with small changes (such as removing the references to Boolean and vbHourglass).
This issue introduces a routine to reindex and compact a Microsoft Access database. Running this routine periodically is a good way to keep your database running efficiently. The CompactDatabase routine that this uses will remove pages that have been deleted and ensure the indexes are valid.
Function ReindexDatabase(sDBName As String) As Boolean
This routine will show several message boxes if any errors occur.
This routine returns True if the database was indexed successfully and False if it failed.
These examples show how to use the ReindexDatabase function.
' This example will reindex the database SALES.MDB ' located in the C:\DATA directory. ReindexDatabase "C:\DATA\SALES.MDB" ' This example assumes the database is located in the ' application directory (The directory the EXE resides in). ReindexDatabase "INVOICES.MDB"
