Requirements for this Issue

The source code in this issue is designed for Visual Basic 5.0 and higher. It will probably work in VB4 32-bit with some minor changes.

In this Issue

This issue shows how to do a task that has been requested by many of our subscribers. This module allows you to play a wave file in two different ways.

Sounds Module

Description

This module uses the API call sndPlaySound in WINMM.DLL to play wave files. It only works on 32-bit platforms (there is a 16-bit version of sndPlaySound, but we did not cover it in this issue). It has several options and we have implemented some of them below. This module supports two methods of wave playing. The first allows you to play an individual wave file and wait until it is finished playing. The second allows you to loop a wave file and let it play in the background until you call SoundStop to stop it playing (which could be useful for games). The first method is called synchronous and the second is called asynchronous.

Parameters

Returns

Nothing is returned upon a successful call (except that a sound will be played).

Sample Usage

A couple of examples are shown below.

    SoundPlay "c:\windows\media\chord.wav"
    SoundPlayForever "SystemExclamation"
    SoundStop

The first line plays a sound and wais until the sound has finished playing before continuing. The second call starts playing a sound forever and returns to your program. It will continue to play until SoundStop is called. This is useful for creating background sounds that repeat until a button is click or some other event occurs.
